Syllable Counter

Type a word or a whole passage. ELAHelp247 counts the syllables in each word and shows you how it broke them up, so you can learn the rules — not just the number.

How syllable counting works

A syllable is a unit of sound built around a vowel. A quick classroom rule: count the groups of vowels (a, e, i, o, u, and y) you hear. This tool uses that rule plus a few common English adjustments:

1. Count each group of vowels as one syllable (so "ea" in team counts once).
2. Don't count a silent e at the end of a word (make → 1).
3. Words ending in -le after a consonant add a syllable (table → 2).
4. Every word has at least one syllable.
